RARE TRADE BEADS
These beads are 16 of the originals trade beads that were given to the Indians by the Dutch to purchase Manhattan Island in 1626.
The Dutch West India Company founden Manhattan as a trading post and from the beginning finances were among in chief interests. In 1626 Peter Manuit, the first Director-General of New Netherlands Province is said to have purchased the Island from Canarsee or Brooklyn Indians with trinkets, beads and cloth valued at about 60 Dutch guilders (about $24 at the time). The Island became possession of the English in 1664, having already been icorporated as the City of New Amsterdam in 1653. Renamed New York City it played a prominent role in the early history of the republic, both militarily and politically. It served as the meeting place for Congress from 1785 ontil 1790, ang George Washington was inaugurated there in 1789 as the first President of United States.
These 16 beads are made of glass and distinctive for their size, material and Dutch style. They were donated to the Indians Museum of North America.
